Putting power into the hands of the people.

Florida is a state with great natural beauty. Throughout the state, developers are spending huge amounts of money to influence political campaigns and as a result, have their way when growth issues come before our elected officials. Florida Hometown Democracy puts the big growth decisions back into the hands of the voters. I support it.

Will McLean

It’s hurricane season in Florida. This song ought to be our state song. It’s “Hold Back the Waters”, the story of the death and destruction caused by the worst hurricane in Florida history, the great hurricane of 1928. The composer and singer is Will McLean, who died too young and left thousands of songs and stories about this beautiful and blessed state. Will was born near Chipley and was a gentleman.

TLH019 - Riding to Tallahassee

Tallahassee sees it’s share of travelers. Between cars and trucks on I-10, the busy Greyhound station and the regional airport, we see a lot of folk passing through. In this edition of the TallyCast, we meet the Pink Panther, Lucinda Chandler, a traveler who passed through our city this past spring on a bicycle. What’s special about Lucinda is that her trip started in San Diego California and ended in St. Augustine, Florida.

Lucinda’s trip blog.

Not many people know that the Southern Tier transcontinental bicycle route passes right through our city. During the spring and fall, we have a lot of bicycle travelers coming through town. The official route (from the Adventure Cycling Association) comes into Tallahassee from Quincy on US-90, shifts to Jackson Bluff and Gaines Street and then turns south to meet the St. Marks bike trail. The route turns off the St. Marks trail south of town and continues east to Monticello.

Lucinda made her trip on a rather unusual bike. She rode a hot pink recumbent tricycle. Not many people know that right here in Tallahassee, a local company, Organic Engines, makes similar bikes. The bike that Lucinda rode was from another Florida bicycle manufacture, CatTrike.

Music on todays podcast comes from one of my past hometowns, Champaign Illinois. The band is “somethingcool” featuring Sam Fisher. The tune is “Bicycle” and comes to us through GarageBand.com.

FRA Gage Restraint Measurement Vehicle 1

This is not the engine that was in Tallahassee on the 4th, but a very similar unit.

This is a US Railroad Administration GRMS similar to the one I saw in Tallahassee on the 4th of July.

GRMS-2

If you were around Gaines Street and Stone Valley Road today (4th of July, 2007), you probably noticed a very strange looking locomotive on the CSX siding. It’s painted blue and yellow, has the CSX logo, is numbered “GRMS-2″ and appears to be a rather high-tech device.

It turns out that it’s a “Track Geometry Unit” and is a rolling computer center on rails. According to Wikipedia.org, it measures the gauge of the tracks, the relative level between the two tracks and does other non-destructive tricks to access the condition of the rails.

I wasn’t smart enough to have a camera long when I saw it today, but there are some excellent photos of GRMS-2 on RailPictures.Net. Click here, here and here for photos of this very engine in other cities.

All the rail in Tallahassee, to the best of my knowledge, belongs to CSX. If you notice a problem with the railroad (such as a stuck signal, a vehicle stuck in a crossing, etc.) the number to call is 1-800-232-0144.

On Railroad Avenue, the All Saints Cafe roasts their own coffee and with coffee, fresh is best.

Old Folks at Home

The state song, Old Folks at Home, by Stephen Foster, has some words in it’s lyrics which in todays context, are, to most people, racist.

This is a slightly redacted version of the song with the offensive line changed. The performers are Tallahassee treasure Doug Gauss and Blountstown fiddle hero, Wayne Martin. The signer is Diane Desloge from the FSDB in St. Augustine. The clip is from the 50th annual Florida Folk Festival on the banks of the Suwannee River in White Springs.
