It’s springtime in North Florida, and time to talk about the circus. We’re getting not one, but two circus troops performing in Tallahassee in the next few months. The opening act is the FSU Flying High Circus with their spring show, “Spectacular” April 3rd through 5th and 10th through 11th. The Flighing High Circus started at FSU back in 1947 and has been going ever since.
The performers at the FSU circus are serious athelets who put in long hours learning the aerial and ground acts. It’s a good time, doesn’t cost much, and a way to help support education.
In May, one of the more amazing circus companies in the world rolls into Tallahassee. Cirque Du Soleil (Circus of the Sun) started when a group of street performers came together in Quebec. These days, the company is big time with shows being staged around the world.
Going to a Cirque performance is an immersion experience. Between the story, the lights, the music, the amazing makeup and costumes, it’s easy to feel that you have been transported to a different world.
Tallahassee is lucky to be on the schedule for the Cirque Du Soleil arena show, Saltimbanco this May.
I had an opportunity to speak with Carmen Ruest, the creative director or Saltimbanco last week for today’s podcast. During our conversation Ms. Ruest talked about the role of the Creative Director, the interplay between all the different aspects of the performance, and what it’s like to travel with the Cirque.
The Cirque du Soleil performance, Saltimbanco, is at the Tallahassee-Leon County Civic Center for 8 performances between May 13th and May 17th. The performance Ticket prices range from $35 to $90 for adults (over 12) and $28 to $72 for kids. Tickets are available now at the box office or from the web site.
UPDATE: Thanks to Émilie at Cirque for pointing out that there are discount “family ticket packs” available along with special pricing for seniors and students. More information is available here.
The photograph of Saltimbanco performers is courtsey of Cirque Du Soleil. The opening music on today’s podcast come from Insane Clown Circus. The closing tune, Rain, is from Tallahassee singer-songwriter Laura Methvin. You can find Laura’s web site at: www.LauraMethvin.com
Laura’s Twitter stream is at: www.twitter.com/weelaura Her Facebook page is at http://www.facebook.com/home.php?tab=2#/pages/Laura-Methvin/37827361747
