Fire on Stearn’s Street Kills One

Friday afternoon, December 10th, a fire in a single family house took the life of 75 year old Betty Scott.  The Tallahassee Fire and Police Departments responded to the blaze at 5:40PM.  The house was fully involved when the officers arrived  The police and fire personnel on scene were unable to effect a rescue.

The home is located 1006 Stearns in the historic Stearns/Mosby neighborhood. The house is located close to the path of the future FAMU Way extension.

As of this morning, the cause of the fire was under investigation.

Stearns Street is named in honor of Marcellus Lovejoy Stearns, the 11th Governor of Florida and the last reconstruction (Republican) governor.

  1. As a former firefighter, I know how easy it is for a house to catch on fire and burn down. Wintertime is especially dangerous as householders use space heaters and fireplaces to attempt to stay warm. During my service as a volunteer firefighter, I responded to many house fires and sadly, several fatalities. While Ms. Scott’s death is a tragedy for her family and neighbors, it’s a reminder that we all should take fire safety seriously.

    If you have a smoke detector, New Years Day is a great time to replace the battery. If you don’t have a smoke detector, go and get one. If you heat with wood, be sure to have your chimney inspected and cleaned annually.
