Locally Grown? It’s strawberry time!

Like all serious foodies, I do my best to eat as much locally grown food as possible.  Believe it or not, there is quite a bit of agriculture happening in our neck-of-the-woods.

John Iaukea from Windy Hill let us know that it’s strawberry time at the farm.  John says that the berries are just starting to come in so if you’re planning to come and pick, you ought to give a call first to make sure that there are berries available.  The Iaukea’s have installed a very interesting raised bed system for their berries which allows pickers (that would be you; it’s a U-Pick operation) to gather berries without too much stooping.

Windy Hill Farm is located at 14663 Mahan Drive.  Mahan is the local name for US-90 on the east end of the county.  Remember: Call the farm first to make sure they have berries available to pick.  Their number is 894-1511.

  1. My wife and I drove by windy hill yesterday and saw the sigh “you-pick strawberries”. I didn’t believe it so we turned around to investigate. Much to my surprise, after we had driven through some fields following the signs, we were greated by the wonderful smell of fresh strawberries. We were handed a bucket by a very friendly man who, with good cause we were soon to find out, was very proud of his product. After one taste I was drown back to a time when strawberries tasted like strawberries( instead of the factory made, gassed, hard red globs we get at the supermarket). Being raised in the country in up-state New York, I recall as a child picking wild strawberries. They were small and it took some time to pick a quart, but once home the berries were cleaned and with a little fresh cream, were straight from heaven. I know good strawberries, and these at windy hills are the best I’ve had in forty years. Thank you John
