The Best Beer Deal in Tallahassee!

The best beer deal in TallahasseeTallahassee, say hello to Hennepin.  It’s a wonderful beer, brewed in Cooperstown, New York.  Cooperstown, a historic town, is probablly best known these days as the home of the Baseball Hall of Fame.  It’s also the home of Brewery Ommegang.  The brewery was started on a small scale in 1997 making Belgian style ales.

That’s what Hennepin is; a Belgan style farmhouse ale.  For those of you who think a nice cold Bud Lightâ„¢ is the epotime of the brewers art, you probably might want to stop reading now.  Hennepin, classified by the brewer as a Sassion style ale is a bit more sophisticated and in your author’s opinion, way more delicious.

You’re looking at a 12 pack of Hennepin in 750 ml bottles.  That’s a little more than a pint and a half of golden delciousness in each bottle.   The bottles are finished with a cork and a wire cage, similar to a bottle of champagne.

The brewery was purchased by Belgian brewery, Duval (it means “devil” in Flemish) a few years back and while production has increased, the beer is still delicious and compared to the “made in Belgium” alternatives, is a bargain.

Here in Tallahassee, you might pay as much as eight or even nine dollars for a bottle of, say Duval.  You can find Hennepin in most of our local package stores for right around six dollars.  At Market Square Liquors, I bought Hennepin last weekend for $5.49.  This evening I bought it at New Leaf Market (on Apalachee Parkway for $6.19.  I spend money at both stores on a regular basis.  Market Square has a great staff and is usally the price leader on most of what they sell, but you gotta love New Leaf.   Every inch of their cooler space is filled with microbrews and imports.   You’ll have to go elsewhere to buy cheap stuff.   And of course, when you shop for beer at New Leaf, you get to spend time in an amazing food store for no extra charge.

In the interest of full disclosure, I’m a lifetime member of the Leon County Food Co-op; the organization that became New Leaf Market.  When the Food Co-op morphed into New Leaf, I was a member of the board of directors.

  1. The best beer deal in ‘Tallahassee is Milwaukee’s Best at Winn Dixie.

  2. Actually, if you’re looking at the amount of ethanol per dollar spent, then you’re correct. If you’re talking about golden deliciousness, you’re sadly mistaken.
