There’s an organization in Tallahassee that celebrates “slow” food. They celebrate food that is grown locally and that is eaten in season. I’m right there with them. Every place I’ve been in my travels has foods and ingredients that are special to that place.
One of the special things about this place; and the southeast in general, is our honey. When I visit old friends in far places, I often ask what I can bring them from Florida. A jar of tupelo honey is often the request. It’s amazing stuff as are most of the local honeys.
Over the years, I’ve had friends with hives and a couple of times considered keeping a few myself. I don’t eat a lot of sweet, but just having a hive in the yard is a good thing. Bees are very beneficial to fruit trees and gardens.
Thanks to my friend for telling me that the Apalachee Beekeeper’s Association is putting on a short course. It’s Sat., February 23rd and runs from 8:30 in the morning until 3:00 in the afternoon. There’s a small charge for attending and preregistration is requested. You can find a link to a .pdf that explains it all on the ABA web site. I found the very interesting photo on their web site.
